Ligue 1

French football league

App / Webiste

December 2023 - July 2024

Ligue 1 is the French top professional football league. based in paris.

The Ligue 1 project involved the complete redesign of the official digital product, covering both the mobile app and the website. The objective was to deliver a modern, immersive experience tailored to football fans, while unifying content, live data, and video within a single ecosystem. The project required balancing strong brand expression, complex content structures, and performance constraints, all within a tight seasonal timeline aligned with the football calendar.

About the project

Our Users

An estimated 23 million Ligue 1 football fans worldwide, with 11 million French supporters considered 'unconditional' fans of their team. They purchase broadcast subscriptions, jerseys, and actively use apps to follow match results.

Their problems

The official broadcaster changes every two years, and the cost is very high. Not all football teams have the resources to create their own official app. It’s also difficult to find all the stats, news, and match replays in a single digital product.

Constraints

Football follows a seasonal cycle, and the challenge was to ensure that the new product (App & Website), with a completely new graphic identity, was ready for launch at the start of the upcoming season. Additionally, all video content was entirely new to the development team, presenting challenges in optimizing product performance

My role

As the lead Designer, my responsibilities included designing a fresh user experience and interface for both the app and website, defining a modern architecture and user journey tailored to football fans habits. I collaborated closely with product managers and developers to ensure alignment between user needs, technical feasibility, and business goals.

User research

Qualitative Interviews

I conducted qualitative interviews with users to explore their behaviors and needs regarding football apps. This research provided valuable insights into their preferences for short content, neutrality, objectivity, and a strong connection for favorites clubs.

"I don't have much time to dedicate to it"

Rizki

"I like shorts formats"

Tristan

"If a video is too long, I skip it"

2. Importance of neutrality and objectivity in content

“they highlight the players they are friends with.”

Rizki

“I feel like I'm wasting a lot of time."

Tristan

"Subjectivity is rare on social media."

Pierre

3. Keep Online Interactions Simple and Effortless

"I talk about football, either in person or in discussion groups, but only with friends."

Kamito

"I only interact with my friends."

Lucas

"Sometimes, I drop likes."

Thomas

"I'm more comfortable answering polls, in stories on Insta or Twitter."

Quantitative questionnaire

I conducted a quantitative survey to gain deeper insights into our users and their specific behaviors when following football. The goal was to better understand their preferences, validate or challenge our assumptions, and refine our strategy accordingly.

Product concept

Based on qualitative interviews and survey insights, we defined four directions to guide the product’s positioning:

• The official image of French football

• Football from a different angle

• The voice of the supporters

• The tactical analyst

To explore how the app could support these visions, we also mapped a typical Ligue 1 week, identifying the types of content the LFP could deliver—videos, articles, games, and more.

User interface

#1 - Home

The Home screen offers a personalized feed, centered around the user’s favorite club.
Content dynamically adapts to the Ligue 1 calendar—highlighting different formats before, during, and after matchday—so fans always see what matters most, at the right time.

#2 - Matchs

To help fans stay connected, their favorite club is always pinned at the top—making it easy to spot their next match at a glance.

#3 - Immersed in identity

The match sheet, club profile, and player page all visually adapt to each team’s identity.
Using club logos and official colors as a foundation, these screens create a unique look and feel for every team—turning basic stats and profiles into a more immersive and emotional fan experience.

#4 - Exclusive content, made for fans

The app offers a new way to follow matches—with stories, short videos, and exclusive features like official match ratings and Man of the Match votes, only available on the Ligue 1 app

#5 - Join the game

Each week, fans pick their best XI from across the league.
After the matches, every player receives a rating out of 10—calculated by a custom algorithm based on real performance.

Prototyping

User testing

o validate navigation flow and overall comprehension, I built an interactive prototype of the app and tested it with users—gathering feedback early to refine the experience.
